SEARCY – Harding University junior Stephen Blake was named to the Academic All-Gulf South Conference Men’s Basketball Team on Monday. Blake was one of six student-athletes honored from the GSC West Division.
Blake, a native of Greenbrier, Ark., played in all 28 games for the Bisons this season, starting 15. He averaged 10.0 points and 2.6 assists per game. Blake also led the team, ranked second in the GSC and 17th in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage at 88.0 percent. He made 95 of 108 free throws this season.
In the classroom, Blake is an exercise science major with a 3.35 grade point average.
The All-Academic Team is selected by the GSC Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average of 3.20 or better and be a starter or significant contributor to the squad. Freshmen are not eligible, nor are any students who have not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member.
Blake is the 16th Harding men's basketball player to receive Academic All-GSC honors since the Bisons joined the GSC for the 2000-01 season.
Head coach Jeff Morgan’s men also had five players on the GSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Those players were Blake, Kevin Brown, Matt Garner, Kirk Porter and Zach Roddenberry. Redshirt freshmen Weston Jameson and Jordan Layrock also had GPA's of over 3.00 but were not eligible for the Honor Roll as redshirts.
Qualification for the Honor Roll is automatic and based on having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Any student-athlete that appeared in a regular season game is eligible.
